Letter of invitation for Dr. Nancy Ageorges to visit ESO
In April 1996 Nancy and I had ADONIS observing time to obtain high resolution
IR polarization maps of the Homunculus nebula around the Luminous Blue
Variable star Eta Carinae. We have surmounted the very considerable
problems of reducing the data including having to contend with some
intrumental peculiarities. Two papers are in an advanced state of
preparation. One describes the acquisition and reduction of
AO polarimetry data, as applied to ADONIS in particular, and the other
reports the scientific results in the form of polarization data at 0.2arcsec
resolution on the Homunculus nebula. In order to exploit the
spatial resolution and obtain polarization data within a few times
the diffraction limit of the bright central source Eta Carinae, we
are attempting to restore the data. We believe that using the blind
deconvolution method to provide the PSF and the Richard-Lucy
restoration method we can reach the required resolution. The scientific
aim is to determine the polarization properties of the UV bright
knots in the near vicinity of Eta Carinae (see e.g. Falke et al.
A&A, 306, L17 1997). We need a dedicated week to complete these tests
and finish the techniques paper. That will allow us to work on
the scientific interpretation of the second paper.
The restorations have been done in IDL; since there is no user license in
Galway she has tried to work over the network but little progress
has been managed.
I would like to invite Nancy to stay at ESO for the week of
30 August to 5 September to enable us to complete this work.
Nancy is on her way to the ESO Workshop on `Astronomy with Adaptive Optics'
at Sonthofen from 7-11 September so the visit fits in well with her
schedule. I can offer subsistence for her stay in Garching.
