ESO-Events zum 50-jährigen Jubiläum

Veranstaltungs-Organisatoren werden eingeladen, sich an einer internationalen Serie von aufeinander abgestimmten Events zum 50-jährigen Jubiläum der Gründung der Europäischen Südsternwarte am 5. Oktober 2012 zu beteiligen. Die Veranstaltungen feiern das europäische Abenteuer zur Erkundung des Südhimmels mit einzigartigen und spannenden Aktivitäten.
Die ESO lädt Veranstaltungsorte wie Volkssternwarten, Planetarien, Museen, Kunstgalerien und andere öffentliche Einrichtungen sowie auch Organisatoren, die an solchen Orten arbeiten dazu ein, eine dieser Veranstaltungen zu begleiten.
Das Kernstück der koordinierten Events wird eine Liveschaltung zum Paranal-Observatorium der ESO in Chile sein, der Heimat des weltweit fortschrittlichsten Teleskops zur Beobachtung im sichtbaren Licht – dem Very Large Telescope (VLT). Außerdem wird eine zuvor nie gezeigte astronomische Aufnahme veröffentlicht.
Zusätzlich zur Liveschaltung und der bislang unveröffentlichten Abbildung werden ESO-Repräsentanten Veranstaltungsorte besuchen, die hochmodernen ESO-Observatorien beschreiben und über die neuesten wissenschaftlichen und technologischen Resultate berichten. Organisatoren können die Veranstaltung um lokale Extras wie zusätzliches Material, öffentliche Diskussionen oder Ausstellungen ergänzen, wie AweESOme Universe (die Ausstellung der ESO zu ihrem 50-jährigen Jubiläum) oder andere Aktivitäten.
Eine Reihe von Souvenirs ist zu den Events verfügbar, wie der Jubiläums-Bildband und die Dokumentation „Europe to the stars“ (auf DVD oder Bluray), das Buch „The Jewel on the Mountaintop“ mit Details zur Geschichte der ESO, Poster, Postkarten und mehr.
Freitag, der 5. Oktober 2012, markiert den 50. Jahrestag zur Gründung der ESO, die am 5. Oktober 1962 mit der Unterzeichnung der ESO-Konvention durch die Gründungsmitglieder Belgien, Frankreich, Deutschland, den Niederlanden und Schweden vollzogen wurde.

Im Jahr 2012 feiert die Europäische Südsternwarte ESO (European Southern Observatory) das 50-jährige Jubiläum ihrer Gründung. Die ESO ist die führende europäische Organisation für astronomische Forschung und das wissenschaftlich produktivste Observatorium der Welt. Getragen wird die Organisation durch ihre 15 Mitgliedsländer: Belgien, Brasilien, Dänemark, Deutschland, Finnland, Frankreich, Italien, die Niederlande, Österreich, Portugal, Spanien, Schweden, die Schweiz, die Tschechische Republik und das Vereinigte Königreich. Die ESO ermöglicht astronomische Spitzenforschung, indem sie leistungsfähige bodengebundene Teleskope entwirft, konstruiert und betreibt. Auch bei der Förderung internationaler Zusammenarbeit auf dem Gebiet der Astronomie spielt die Organisation eine maßgebliche Rolle. Die ESO betreibt drei weltweit einzigartige Beobachtungsstandorte in Nordchile: La Silla, Paranal und Chajnantor. Auf dem Paranal betreibt die ESO mit dem Very Large Telescope (VLT) das weltweit leistungsfähigste Observatorium für Beobachtungen im Bereich des sichtbaren Lichts und zwei Teleskope für Himmelsdurchmusterungen: VISTA, das größte Durchmusterungsteleskop der Welt, arbeitet im Infraroten, während das VLT Survey Telescope (VST) für Himmelsdurchmusterungen ausschließlich im sichtbaren Licht konzipiert ist. Die ESO ist der europäische Partner für den Aufbau des Antennenfelds ALMA, das größte astronomische Projekt überhaupt. Derzeit entwickelt die ESO ein Großteleskop der 40-Meter-Klasse für Beobachtungen im Bereich des sichtbaren und Infrarotlichts, das einmal das größte optische Teleskop der Welt werden wird, das European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT).
