Der „Vater der Röntgenastronomie“ und ehemaliger ESO-Generaldirektor, Schlüssel zum Erfolg des Very Large Telescopes der ESO, ist verstorben

Der fünfte Generaldirektor der ESO, Riccardo Giacconi, ist am Sonntag, dem 9. Dezember 2018, im Alter von 87 Jahren verstorben.
Riccardo Giacconi leitete die ESO von 1993 bis 1999 – einer äußerst wichtigen Zeit in der Geschichte der Organisation: Die ESO baute gerade die Einrichtung, die jetzt ihr Flaggschiff ist, das Very Large Telescope (VLT) auf dem Cerro Paranal, und ging eine Partnerschaft ein, die in das Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimetre Array (ALMA) mündete. Die Erfolge dieser Jahre und insbesondere der Bau des VLT brachten die ESO auf den Weg, die weltweit führende astronomische Organisation zu werden, die sie heute ist.
Riccardo Giacconi wurde am 6. Oktober 1931 in Genua, Italien, geboren. Sowohl seinen Abschluss in Physik als auch seine Promotion absolvierte er an der Universität Mailand. 1956, zwei Jahre nach seiner Promotion, wechselte Giacconi an die Indiana University, USA, und dann an die Princeton University, ebenfalls USA, um dort am Laboratorium für kosmische Strahlung zu arbeiten – dem Princeton Cosmic Ray Laboratory.
Nach seiner Zeit in Princeton begann Giacconi mit der Arbeit, die ihm den Titel „Vater der Röntgenastronomie“ einbrachte. Er war bei American Science and Engineering unter Vertrag, um ein Weltraum-Forschungsprogramm ins Leben zu rufen, und Giacconi entschied, dass sich das Programm auf die Beobachtung von Röntgen-Wellenlängen konzentrieren sollte. Diese Entscheidung markierte erfolgreich den Beginn der Röntgenastronomie. 1962 entdeckten Giacconi und sein Team Scorpius X-1, die erste bekannte Röntgenstrahlen-Quelle außerhalb des Sonnensystems, sowie den kosmischen Röntgenstrahlen-Hintergrund.
„Da ich selbst ein Röntgenastronom bin, erhellten Riccardo Giacconi und seine Arbeit mehr als drei Jahrzehnte meiner Karriere – schon lange, bevor ich zur ESO kam“, sagt Xavier Barcons, der aktuelle ESO-Generaldirektor. „Ich betrachte es als eine große Ehre, einer seiner Nachfolger als Generaldirektor zu sein in einer Organisation, die er so sehr mitgestaltete.“
In seiner Zeit als ESO-Generaldirektor nahm Giacconi bedeutende Änderungen an der Organisation der ESO vor; sie waren entscheidend, um das VLT einen Erfolg werden zu lassen. Vor allem waren seine modernen Management-Techniken gut für große Programme geeignet und förderten eine stärkere Zusammenarbeit zwischen Deutschland und Chile. Dank seiner Führung konnte die ESO erhebliche technologische und finanzielle Schwierigkeiten beim Bau des VLT überwinden, und zwei der vier Haupt-Teleskope sahen gegen Ende seiner Amtszeit erstes Licht.
Während seiner Amtszeit als Generaldirektor beaufsichtigte Giacconi auch die weiteren Entwicklungen auf La Silla. Durch seine Unterstützung wurde das New Technology Telescope (NTT) verbessert. Das NTT bereitete den Weg für neue Technologien und modernes Design von Teleskopen. Es war das erste Teleskop der Welt mit einem Hauptspiegel, der durch einen Computer kontrolliert wurde.
Nachdem er die ESO verlassen hatte, kehrte Giacconi 2002 in die Vereinigten Staaten zurück, um einen Posten als Präsident der Associated Universities Incorporated (AUI) anzunehmen.
Im selben Jahr wurde er mit dem Nobelpreis für Physik ausgezeichnet - „für bahnbrechende Beiträge zur Astrophysik, die zur Entdeckung kosmischer Röntgenstrahl-Quellen geführt haben“.
Riccardo Giaconnis Beiträge als Generaldirektor halfen, die ESO zu der weltweit führenden Organisation zu machen, die sie heute ist, und seine Führung wird als wesentlich für den anhaltenden Erfolg der ESO in Erinnerung bleiben.
