Lodewijk Woltjer (1930–2019)

De voormalige directeur-generaal van ESO, Lodewijk Woltjer, is op zondag 25 augustus 2019 op 89-jarige leeftijd overleden.
Lodewijk Woltjer, bij velen bekend als Lo, was van 1975 tot 1987 de derde en langst zittende directeur-generaal van ESO. Al voordat hij de functie van directeur-generaal op zich nam had hij een sterke visie op de toekomst van ESO. Een van zijn belangrijkste bijdragen was de oprichting van een wetenschapsafdeling, die ESO omvormde van een zuiver functionele sterrenwacht tot een actieve wetenschappelijke onderzoeksorganisatie.
Professor Woltjer was niet alleen verantwoordelijk voor deze fundamentele verandering en uitbreiding van de ESO-activiteiten, maar hield tijdens zijn ambtstermijn toezicht op tal van belangrijke ontwikkelingen. Het gaat daarbij onder meer om de totstandkoming van het ESO-hoofdkantoor in Garching en de toetreding van twee nieuwe lidstaten, Italië en Zwitserland, in 1982. Verder tekende hij een overeenkomst met de directeur van het Max Planck Instituut om de zogeheten 2,2-meter MPG/ESO-telescoop op La Silla te installeren, en zag hij toe op het ontwerp en de vroege bouwfasen van de New Technology Telescope – een cruciale voorloper van de Very Large Telescope (VLT). Hij versterkte ook de relaties tussen ESO en andere organisaties, wat onder meer resulteerde in een overeenkomst met het Europese ruimteagentschap ESA voor de Space Telescope European Coordinating Facility, die bij ESO Garching werd ondergebracht. Vlak voor het einde van zijn periode als directeur-generaal kreeg hij goedkeuring van de ESO-raad voor de bouw van de VLT en drong hij er sterk op aan om deze op Paranal te stationeren.
Lodewijk Woltjer werd op 26 april 1930 in Noordwijk geboren als zoon van astronoom Jan Woltjer. Hij studeerde aan de Universiteit Leiden en deed zijn promotieonderzoek bij Jan Oort. In 1957 promoveerde hij op een proefschrift over de structuur van het magnetische veld van de Krabnevel. Na zijn promotie bleef Woltjer onderzoek doen op het gebied van de theoretische astrofysica en plasmafysica. Hij onderzocht quasars, supernovaresten en magnetische velden in sterren en sterrenstelsels. Hij ontving twee postdoctorale onderzoeksbenoemingen aan universiteiten in de Verenigde Staten en keerde vervolgens in 1959 terug naar de Universiteit Leiden in 1959 als lector astronomie. Twee jaar later werd hij hoogleraar in de theoretische astrofysica en plasmafysica – een functie die hij tot 1964 bekleedde. Tussen 1964 en 1974 werkte Woltjer aan de Columbia Universiteit in New York, eerst als voorzitter van de afdeling Astronomie en vervolgens als Rutherfurd-hoogleraar Astronomie.
Na zijn tijd bij ESO bleef hij actief in de astronomie en was hij van 1994 tot 1997 drie jaar president van de Internationale Astronomische Unie. Hij was ook lid van vele commissies en divisies van de IAU en werkte bij de sterrenwachten van de Haute-Provence (Frankrijk) en Arcetri (Italië).
Lodewijk Woltjer zal worden herinnerd voor zijn vastberaden leiderschap van ESO, die de weg bereidde voor de VLT - ons huidige paradepaardje. Ook nadat hij ESO had verlaten, hield hij contact met de organisatie en bracht hij verschillende keren een bezoek aan de sterrenwachten in Chili. Laatstelijk in 2017, op 87-jarige leeftijd, reisde hij nog naar Chili om de ceremonie voor de eerstesteenlegging bij te wonen voor de Extremely Large Telescope, het toekomstige vlaggenschip van ESO.
