Stars and lasers
Unit Telescope 4 (Yepun) of ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) sends up laser light to create an artificial guide star to help with observations at the Paranal Observatory. The exceptional viewing conditions at this location are exemplified by this clear sky in which the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds are visible.
