APEX on Chajnantor

Breathtaking landscape on the Chajnantor plateau, located at 5000 metres altitude in the Chilean Andes, some 50 km away from S. Pedro de Atacama. Its elevation and dryness make Chajnantor one of the best sites on Earth for submillimetre-wavelength astronomical observations. In this beautiful view towards the north, the APEX 12-metre telescope is visible. The path connects APEX to the ALMA Technical Building. ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, is the largest astronomical project in existence and it is currently under construction on the Chajnantor plateau.
