Een waterval van sterren
Veel astronomische foto's bieden prachtige vergezichten op de hemel, en deze is daarop geen uitzondering. Hoewel er aan dit panorama wel iets ongewoons is. Achter ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), lijken twee banen van sterren zich als een waterval naar beneden te storten, of misschien stijgen ze wel op als rookkolommen. Dat komt doordat dit panorama de gehele hemelkoepel weergeeft, van het zenit naar beneden tot aan de horizon, en daarlangs 360 graden rond. De twee stromen zijn in feite één band: het vlak van onze melkweg dat als een boog langs de hemel loopt, van horizon tot horizon. Het gedeelte recht boven ons wordt uitgerekt over de gehele bovenrand van het panorama. De vervorming die nodig is om het volledige hemelgewelf in een vlak, rechthoekig beeld te persen
Om te begrijpen wat je ziet, kun je je voorstellen dat de linkerrand van de foto wordt vastgemaakt aan de rechterkant, zodat het beeld in een lus om je heen staat en dat de bovenrand wordt samengetrokken naar een punt boven je hoofd. Zo word je omringd door de volledige hemelkoepel.
Aan de linkerkant van het beeld, boven het gebouw, is het silhouet te zien van een paal met windzak. Aan de linkerkant van de windzak, zie je als heldere vlek de Kleine Magelhaense Wolk, een naburig sterrenstelsel van de Melkweg. Aan de rechterkant, in het vlak van de Melkweg, de rode gloed van de Carina-nevel. Daarboven de duisternis van de Kolenzaknevel, naast de het Zuiderkruis, en iets hoger nog zijn de twee heldere sterren Alpha en Beta Centauri zichtbaar. De vier hoge gebouwen in de afbeelding huisvesten de 8,2-meter Unit Telescopes (UTs) van de VLT. Tussen de twee UTs aan de rechterkant staat het kleinere gebouw van de VLT Survey Telescope. Aan de rechterkant van het beeld staat de planeet Venus nog net boven de horizon als een gloeiende bol.
Dit panorama, waarin niet alleen de VLT op de bergtop van Cerro Paranal, maar ook de prachtige hemel erboven die door het observatorium wordt bestudeerd te zien is, werd gemaakt door ESO Foto Ambassadeur Serge Brunier. Net zoals de VLT's state-of-the-art technologie ons zicht op het universum vergroot, maakt Serge gebruik van de meest geavanceerde fototechniek om in één beeld het hele uitspansel vast te leggen. - veel meer dan onze ogen in één blik kunnen omvatten.
