Sterrenkijken in het Zuiden
Hier staat Babak A. Tafreshi, een van ESO’s fotoambassadeurs, onder de prachtige zuidelijke sterrenhemel. Babak staat op een deel van het enorme vulkaancomplex Miñiques, gelegen in de Antofagastaregio in Chili’s Atacamawoestijn. Deze regio is ook de thuisbasis van ESO’s Paranal Observatorium, waar de Very Large Telescope (VLT) naar de hemel staart en exotische fenomenen als gammaflitsen, extrasolaire planeten en superzware zwarte gaten observeert.
Elk van de telescopen die onderdeel uitmaken van de VLT kunnen objecten detecteren die ongeveer vier miljard keer zwakker zijn dan het blote oog kan zien. Hierdoor heeft de VLT veel beter zicht op het heelal dan mensen. De lucht boven de Atacamawoestijn is echter wel een van de helderste en donkerste ter wereld, dus het is geen wonder dat Babak er toch zwaar van onder de indruk is.
De spectaculaire blauwe werveling boven Babaks hoofd is de Grote Magelhaense Wolk, een dwergsterrenstelsel dat om de Melkweg heen draait. Het maakt deel uit van de Lokale Groep en is het op twee na dichtstbijzijnde sterrenstelsel, op ongeveer 163 000 lichtjaar afstand. Vroeger werd de Grote Magelhaense Wolk geclassificeerd als onregelmatig sterrenstelsel, maar sterrenkundigen denken nu dat het oorspronkelijk een balkspiraalstelsel was, voordat het werd vervormd door de zwaartekracht van de Melkweg en de nabijgelegen Kleine Magelhaense Wolk. Een brug van gas gevuld met protosterren verbindt de Kleine en Grote Magelhaense Wolk, wat bewijs is van de getijdenkrachten tussen de twee sterrenstelsels.
