XXIII IAU General Assembly
The XXIIIrd General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) was held in Kyoto, Japan, on August 18 - 30, 1997. Seen in the picture is IAU President (and former ESO Director General) Lodewijk Woltjer addressing the Assembly with the Emperor and Empress of Japan in attendance.
