ELT central tower

The ELT is set to boast a pioneering five-mirror design that no other telescope has featured before. The altitude structure will support the primary and secondary mirrors, whereas the central tower, represented in this image, will support the other three.

The central tower, which measures ten metres in height, presented some difficult design challenges. The space available for the beam structure is limited, because of the space required for optical units and thier maintenance. However, the central tower structure must be rigid to ensure top performance of the telescope. This is an example of just one of the challenges faced when designing and building a telescope structure of this scale.
