OmegaCAM, the monster camera of the VLT Survey Telescope

The OmegaCAM camera lies at the heart of the VST. It is built around 32 CCD detectors that together create 268-megapixel images. The camera contains extra CCDs to control the guiding and active optics systems as well as many huge colour filters. OmegaCAM was designed and built by a consortium including institutes in the Netherlands, Germany and Italy with major contributions from ESO. This picture shows the core detector system component of OmegaCAM.
