Vista panorámica de Chajnantor en 360 grados
Si bien Cerro Chico alcanza la imponente altura de 5300 metros sobre el nivel del mar, no parece más que un pequeño monte en el majestuoso llano de Chajnantor, en los Andes chilenos. Sin embargo, gracias su posición privilegiada en esta enorme explanada, la cumbre de Cerro Chico ofrece una perspectiva excelente y relativamente asequible para disfrutar de una impresionante vista.
Esta imagen panorámica de 360 grados está centrada en el noreste, donde se pueden apreciar los volcanes más altos —la mayoría sobre los 5500 metros. En el centro se encuentra el propio Cerro Chajnantor. A la derecha, en el llano, se puede ver el Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) con Cerro Chascon en su espalda. Más a la derecha, hacia el sureste, el llano de Chajnantor es completamente visible. Además del telescopio APEX es posible ver tres antenas del Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) a la derecha. Muchas más han sido incorporadas desde que esta vista panorámica fue tomada.
A la derecha del Cerro Chajnantor se encuentra Cerro Toco. Más a la izquierda, hacia el noroeste, se observa el inconfundible cono del volcán Licancabur.
En el llano deChajnantor, a 5000 metros de altura, el aire es tan seco y contiene tan poco oxígeno que los pulmones parecen no llenarse nunca. Gracias a estas condiciones extremas, la radiación milimétrica y submilimétrica que proviene del Universo logra traspasar lo que queda de atmósfera sobre el lugar y es finalmente detectada por tlescopios altamente sensibles como ALMA y APEX.
APEX es una colaboración entre el Instituto Max-Planck de Radio Astronomía (MPIfR), el Observatorio Espacial de Onsala (OSO) y ESO. La operación del telescopio está a cargo de ESO.
El Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), una instalación astronómica internacional, es una alianza entre Europa, Norteamérica y Asia del Este en colaboración con la República de Chile. La construcción y operaciones de ALMA son dirigidas en nombre de Europa por ESO, en nombre de Norteamérica por el Observatorio Radioastronómico Nacional (NRAO), administrado a su vez por Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI), y en representación de Asia del Este por el Observatorio Astronómico Nacional de Japón (NAOJ). El Observatorio Global ALMA (JAO por su sigla en inglés) proporciona el liderazgo conjunto para conducir la construcción, puesta en funcionamiento y operaciones científicas de ALMA.
