Radioteleskopy ALMA a APEX nahlédly hluboko do minulosti vesmíru, do doby, kdy byl vesmír desetkrát mladší než dnes, a pozorovaly počáteční fázi gigantického kosmického hromadění hmoty – probíhající kolizi mladých galaxií s překotnou tvorbou hvězd. Astronomové se dosud domnívali, že k těmto událostem ve vesmíru docházelo asi tři miliardy let po velkém třesku. Tato nová pozorování však odhalují, že tyto procesy se odehrávaly ještě o více než miliardu let dříve, což je velkým překvapením. Předpokládá se, že tyto prastaré systémy představují zárodky nejhmotnějších známých struktur současného vesmíru: kup galaxií.
