Jasná mlhovina Tarantula patří k nejpůsobivějším objektům Velkého Magellanova oblaku – malé satelitní galaxie vzdálené asi 160 000 světelných let od naší Galaxie. Pomocí přehlídkového dalekohledu ESO/VLT se astronomům podařilo získat záběry této rozsáhlé mlhoviny a jejího širokého okolí v mimořádných detailech. Snímek odhaluje kosmickou scenérii s mnoha hvězdokupami, zářícími oblaky plynu a rozptýlenými pozůstatky po explozích supernov. Uvedená fotografie představuje dosud nejdetailnější pohled na celé takto rozsáhlé hvězdného pole.
