Arzenálu teleskopů ESO v Chile se podařilo detekovat první optický protějšek zdroje gravitačních vln. Pozorování, která vejdou do historie, navíc naznačují, že tento unikátní objekt je výsledkem splynutí dvojice neutronových hvězd a jedná se o dlouho hledaný jev známý jako kilonova. Následkem tohoto typu kataklyzmatického spojení jsou do okolního kosmického prostoru rozptýleny těžké chemické prvky jako zlato nebo platina. Objev, který byl zveřejněn v řadě článků v prestižním vědeckém žurnálu Nature a dalších časopisech, rovněž poskytuje dosud nejsilnější důkazy, že krátké záblesky záření gama způsobuje právě spojení dvou neutronových hvězd.
