Šarlat a dým
Dýmově černá silueta na tomto novém obrázku je součástí velkého řídkého oblaku částečně ionizovaného vodíku - HII oblasti - známé jako Gum 15. Na širokoúhlých záběrech mlhovina vypadá jako výrazný načervenalý až nafialovělý shluk posázený hvězdami a protínaný neprůhlednými prachovými čarami. Tento obrázek se soustředí na jednu prachovou čáru v centru mlhoviny.
Tyto tmavé části oblohy mají zdánlivě méně hvězd, protože prachové čáry zakrývají jasné svítící oblasti plynu. Hvězdy, které se v tmavých čarách občas objeví, se ve skutečnosti nacházejí mezi námi a mlhovinou Gum 15, i když vytvářejí iluzi, že se skrz okno díváme na vzdálenější nebe.
Gum 15 je tvarován silnými větry, které vanou z hvězd uvnitř a okolo mlhoviny. Oblak se nachází mezi několika velkými hvězdnými asociacemi, včetně hvězdokupy ESO 313-13. O nejjasnějším členu této hvězdokupy - hvězdě HD 74804 - se předpokládá, že ionizovala vodíkový oblak Gum 15. Ionizovaný vodík vytváří červeň, která proniká obrázkem.
Obrázek byl pořízen v rámci programu ESO Cosmic Gems[1] (Kosmické drahokamy) za pomoci zařízení FORS na velkém dalekohledu ESO (VLT) na observatoři Paranal v Chile. Uvedený program ve skutečnosti vytvořil více obrázků tohoto objektu - v červenci 2014 ESO uveřejnilo nádherný širokoúhlý snímek mlhoviny Gum 15 za pomoci širokoúhlé kamery na 2.2m dalekohledu MPG/ESO na observatoři La Silla. Tento širokoúhlý snímek detailně zobrazuje zvláštně vytvarovaná oblaka mlhoviny, temný prach a jasně svítící hvězdy. Část mlhoviny, která je znovu a s většími podrobnostmi zachycena na obrázku pořízeném VLT se nachází poblíž horní levé čtvrtiny na obrázku z 2.2m dalekohledu.

[1] Program "ESO Cosmic Gems" má za úkol vytvářet obrázky zajímavých, poutavých nebo vizuálně atraktivních objektů za pomoci dalekohledů ESO, za účelem vzdělávání a popularizace. Program využívá čas na dalekohledech, který se nedá použít pro vědecká pozorování. Všechna naměřená se dají použít i k vědeckým účelům a astronomové je mohou získat přes vědecký archív ESO.
