Video News Release 5: ALMA at Chajnantor

ESO Video News Reel 5 ("ALMA at Chajnantor") is published on June 15, 1999, following the signing in Washington D.C. of a Memorandum of Understanding for this new astronomy project, cf. the Joint NSF/ESO Press Release and ESO Press Release eso9929 and  eso9928. The 7-min Video New Reel begins with a sequence of recent astronomical images obtained with the ESO VLT, here illustrating the various types of objects that will be observed with ALMA. This is followed by footage from the 15-metre Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST) at La Silla, the only of its type so far in the southern hemisphere and a "model" of one of the ALMA dishes. A statement is made by the responsible ESO scientist about the significance of the new project and the need to place ALMA at a high-altitude site. There are several views of the Chajnantor site at 5000 metre altitude, followed by a 52-sec animation of the array during which the perspective changes and the ALMA dishes move in unison. Some site testing activities are seen, including the launch of a meteorological balloon, and there is a final statement about the great variety of research programmes that can be made with ALMA.

This Video News Release is targeted especially at broadcasters for further editing. In order to keep the audio tracks editable, different sound information has been recorded on two separate tracks at optimal volumes as is common standard in professional post production. This video is not meant for on screen viewing — on ESOcasts are better suited for that.
