Det mest produktive observatorium på Jorden: Et kig på ESO’s forskningsresultater i 2019

Videnskabelige observationer ved ESO i Chile har været sat på pause den seneste måned, men data indsamlet af vores teleskoper i fortiden fortsætter med at bidrage til astronomien år efter, at observationer er foretaget. En nyligt udgivet rapport fra ESO Biblioteket viser, at alene i 2019 blev mere end 1.000 publikationer med data fra ESO-teleskoperne publiceret.

Det største bidrag kommer fra ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) og VLT’s Interferometer på ESO’s Paranalobservatorium i Chile. I 2019 blev i alt 597 videnskabelige studier med data fra faciliteterne publiceret. De mest produktive instrumenter var UVES, MUSE og X-shooter, som hver bidrog med data til over 100 forskningsartikler.

Et par nøgleresultater fra ESO’s flagskib VLT i 2019 er: Opdagelsen af den første gaskæmpeplanet i kredsløb om en Sollignende stjernerest og den første opdagelse af et tungt grundstof født i kølvandet på et sammenstød mellem neutronstjerner.

ESO’s andre teleskoper ved Paranal, VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) og VST (VLT Survey Telescope) leverede også betydelige bidrag. I 2019 blev data fra VISTA og VST brugt i henholdsvis 98 og 55 videnskabelige studier. Det inkluderede et studie, hvor VISTA afslørede et nyt billede af Den Store Megallanske Sky, hvilket gjorde omkring yderligere 10 millioner stjerner synlige, og et billede af hvordan VST hjalp med at fastlægge Gaias kredsløb for bedst muligt at kunne kortlægge Mælkevejen.

ESO’s La Silla-observatorium kunne sidste år fejre 50 års jubilæum, og det kulminerede med en total solformørkelse. Data fra La Silla bidrog til 207 videnskabelige studier, som blev publiceret sidste år, og det viser, at selv efter at have lavet observationer i et halvt århundrede kan La Silla fortsat levere bemærkelsesværdig videnskab.

ALMA (the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array), som ESO er partner i, bidrog med data til 219 forskningsartikler, som specifikt brugte europæisk ALMA-tidsfordeling, mens ESO’s APEX (the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment) bidrog med data til i alt 32 videnskabelige studier.

Basic ESO Publication Statistics rapporterer hvert år, hvor figurerne bliver publiceret og fremhæver også, at antallet af publicerede artikler med data fra ESO-arkivet fortsat stiger. I 2019 var 35 % af de mere end 1.000 publicerede artikler afhængige af arkivdata, enten ved brug af eksklusivt arkiverede ESO-data (hvor ingen af forfatterne var en del af observationsholdet) eller ved at implementere arkiverede data sammen med data, forfatterne havde samlet.

Publikationsantallet fremhæver ESO’s samlede bidrag til astronomiforskning, mens de få fremviste nøgleresultater giver en ide om det vigtige videnskabelige arbejde, der er gennemført med ESO-teleskoperne. Sammenligningen mellem ESO og andre observatorier er kompliceret af brugen af forskellige metoder, der bruges til at tælle videnskabelige studier, men ESO forbliver det mest produktive observatorium på Jordens overflade.

ESO gør en omfattende indsats for at identificere alle artikler, hvor ESO-data bruges, og telbib betragtes som væsentligt komplet.

ALMA, en international astronomifacilitet, er et partnerskab mellem ESO, USA’s National Science Foundation (NSF) og National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) fra Japan i samarbejde med Chile.
