Solopgang over VLT
Dette billed viser starten på solopgangen over “Very Large Telescope” (VLT) ved ESOs Paranal observatorium i Chile. Et af VLTs enheds-teleskoper er synligt i fuldt måneskin nederst til højre i billedet. Længere ude er der to hjælpe-teleskoper, der peger opad.
VLT består af 4 8.2-meter enheds-teleskoper (ET) og fire flytbare hjælpe-teleskoper (HT). Alle disse kan bringes til at arbejde sammen som et gigantisk interferometer: ”Very Large Telescope Interferometer” (VLTI). Lyset, der falder ind på hvert enheds-teleskop, kan føres via underjordiske tunneler og et indviklet system af spejle til en central detektor, hvor astronomerne kan se detaljer 16 gange bedre end med enheds-teleskoperne hver for sig.
Billedet er taget at Nicolas Blind, en astronom, der besøgte Paranal Observatoriet i få dage i december 2012. Skønt Blind kun var der i en kort periode fik han en enestående oplevelse. ”Den fuldstændige stilhed på dette sted er så fredelig og afslappende”, husker han. ”Man kan kun høre lyden af vinden eller måske en vildfaren flagermus i dette øde område. Paranals rene himmel minder mig om, hvor små vi er, og om grunden til, at jeg valgte astronomi som fag.”
Paranal Observatoriet har helt utroligt 330 klare nætter om året. Faktisk er VLT det mest produktive jord-baserede observatorium i verden takket være dette klare vejr, teknologien og den tekniske stab.
