Jupiters plet gløder

forskere får første kig på vejret i Solsystemets største storm

Nye banebrydende termiske billeder taget med ESO’s Very Large Telescope og andre kraftige jordbaserede teleskoper viser hvirvler af varm luft og kølige områder, der aldrig før er set i Jupiters store røde plet. Billederne giver forskere mulighed for at lave de første detaljerede vejrkort for de indre dele af det gigantiske stormsystem, der sammenkæder stormens temperatur, vind, tryk og sammensætning med dens farve.

”Det er vores første detaljerede kig ind i den største storm i Solsystemet,” siger Glenn Orton, der stod i spidsen for det hold af astronomer, der lavede undersøgelsen. ”Vi troede engang, at den store røde plet var en simpel, gammel oval uden megen struktur, men disse nye resultater viser, at den i virkeligheden er ekstremt kompliceret.”

Observationerne afslører, at den rødeste farve i den store røde plet svarer til en varm kerne i det ellers kolde stormsystem, og billederne viser mørke baner ved kanten af stormen, hvor gasser synker ned i de dybere dele af planeten. Observationerne, der er beskrevet i en artikel i tidsskriftet Icarus, giver forskere en fornemmelse af cirkulationsmønstrene i Solsystemets bedst kendte stormsystem.

Stjernekiggere har observeret den store røde plet på den ene eller anden måde i hundredvis af år, med vedvarende observationer af dens nuværende form, der går tilbage til det 19. århundrede. Pletten, som er et koldt område med en gennemsnitstemperatur på omkring -160 grader Celsius, er så stor, at Jorden kunne ligge i den næsten tre gange.

De fleste af de termiske billeder er optaget med VISIR-instrumentet [1], der er monteret på ESO’s Very Large Telescope i Chile. Yderligere data kommer fra Gemini South Telescope i Chile og National Astronomical Observatory of Japans Subaru Telescope på Hawaii. Billederne giver en hidtil uset grad af detaljerigdom og har udvidet den dækning, som NASA’s Galileo-sonde leverede i slutningen af 1990’erne. Sammen med observationer af den dybe skystruktur lavet med 3-meter NASA Infrared Telescope Facility på Hawaii, er graden af termiske detaljer set fra disse store observatorier, for første gang sammenligneligt med billeder optaget i synligt lys af NASA/ESA’s Hubble-rumteleskop.

VISIR gør det muligt for astronomerne at kortlægge temperaturen, aerosoler og ammoniak i og omkring stormen. Hver af disse parametre fortæller os, hvordan vejret og cirkulationsmønstrene ændrer sig i stormen, både rumligt (i 3D) og med tiden. VISIR-observationer indsamlet gennem flere år koblet med data fra de andre observationer afslører, at stormen er utrolig stabil trods turbulens, omvæltninger og tætte møder med andre anticykloner, der påvirker kanten af stormsystemet.

”En af de mest spændende opdagelser er, at den mest intense orangerøde centrale del af pletten, er omkring 3 til 4 grader varmere end omgivelserne,” siger hovedforfatter Leigh Fletcher. Denne temperaturforskel lyder måske ikke af meget, men den er stor nok til, at stormcirkulationen, der normalt går mod uret, kan skifte til en svag cirkulation med uret lige midt i stormen. Derudover er temperaturændringen nok til at ændre vindhastigheder og påvirke skymønstre i bælter og zoner på andre dele af Jupiter.

”Det er første gang, vi kan sige, at der er en tæt sammenhæng mellem miljøforhold – temperatur, vind, tryk og sammensætning – og farven af den store røde plet,” siger Fletcher. ”Selvom vi kan spekulere, ved vi stadig ikke med sikkerhed hvilke kemiske stoffer eller processer, der er skyld i den dybe røde farve, men vi ved nu, at det er relateret til ændringer i de miljømæssige forhold i hjertet af stormen.”

[1]VISIR står for VLT Imager and Spectrometer for mid InfraRed (eso0417). Det er et komplekst multiinstrument designet til at operere i de atmosfæriske vinduer ved 10 og 20 mikrometer, dvs. ved bølgelængder op til omkring 40 gange længere end synligt lys, og lave billeder så vel som spektre.
