Licancabur

Impressive close-up of Licancabur, the most iconic volcano in the area of San Pedro de Atacama, in the II Region of Chile. With an altitude of 5920 m, this border mountain divided between Chile and Bolivia dominates the landscape with its unmistakable conic shape, which makes it easily recognisable even from very far away. The picture was taken from the road to Chajnantor, the 5000 m high plateau home of ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the largest astronomical project in existence.
