The silent SEST
This is the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST) which was decommissioned in 2003. Its 15-metre diameter dish is silently towering over the La Silla landscape. In the background you can see the ESO 3.6-metre telescope, which has been in operation since 1987.
