Kahden neutronitähden yhdistymisen seurauksena muodostunutta raskasta strontium alkuainetta on havaittu avaruudessa ensimmäistä kertaa. Havainto tehtiin ESO:n "X-shooter"-spektrografilla VLT-teleskoopilla ja se julkaistiin tänään Nature-julkaisussa. Havainto varmisti sen, että Universumin raskaita alkuaineita voi muodostua neutronitähtien yhdistymisissä ja siten havainto selventää kemiallisten alkuaineiden muodostumisen palapelissä tarvittavia osia.
