Eine Oase für Astronomen — die Paranal Residencia der ESO damals und heute

Die ESO wird in diesem Jahr 50 Jahre alt, und um dieses wichtige Jubiläum zu feiern, werfen wir einen Blick in unsere Vergangenheit. Während des gesamten Jahres wird einmal pro Monat ein spezielles „Damals und Heute“-Bild der Woche illustrieren, wie sich die Dinge auf La Silla, am Paranal-Observatorium, in den ESO-Büros in Santiago de Chile und am Hauptsitz der ESO in Garching bei München über die Jahrzehnte verändert haben.

Seit dem Februar 2002 (siehe eso0205) bietet die „Residencia“ am Paranal eine Unterkunft für Menschen, die am Observatorium im Schichtbetrieb arbeiten. Der Paranal in Chiles Atacama-Wüste ist die Heimat vom Very Large Telescope (VLT) der ESO. In diesem Monat geben die „Damals und heute“-Aufnahmen – beide von ESO-Fotobotschafter Gerhard Hüdepohl aufgenommen – einen einmaligen Blick darauf, wie diese Oase in der Wüste gebaut wurde.

Die historische Aufnahme zeigt die Residencia während der Bauphase gegen Ende des Jahres 2000. Das Gebäude wurde vom deutschen Architekturbüro Auer+Weber entworfen und basiert auf einer unterirdischen L-Form. Das Baumaterial hat die gleiche Farbe wie die Wüste und integriert sich damit vollständig in die Landschaft. Der schon teilweise fertiggestellte zentrale Bereich der Residencia erinnert an ein Amphitheater aus aufgestapeltem Naturstein, das den Blick zu einem wolkenlosen Himmel öffnet.

Heute sieht die Residencia völlig anders aus. Trotz der unterirdischen Bauweise erzeugt das unverwechselbare Design der Innengestaltung einen Eindruck von einem offenem Raum. Die zentrale Halle ist von einer 35 Meter durchmessenden Kuppel geschützt, die natürliches Tageslicht in das Gebäude leitet. Das sterile Amphitheater aus dem Jahr 2000 ist als großartiger tropischer Garten mit einem Schwimmbecken im unteren Bereich neu angelegt. Sowohl der Garten als auch das Schwimmbecken erhöhen die Luftfeuchte im Gebäudeinneren und gestatten den Beschäftigten eine Erholung von den extrem wasserarmen äußeren Bedingungen an einem der trockensten Orte der Erde.

Dank des unverwechselbaren Designs der Residencia ist sie weit über die Grenzen der astronomischen Gemeinschaft hinaus berühmt. Zum Beispiel wurden hier im Jahr 2008 einige Schlüsselszenen zu dem James-Bond-Film „Ein Quantum Trost“ gedreht, die Residencia spielt die Rolle des Hotels „Perla de las Dunas“ [1], 2009 wurde die Residencia vom britischen Guardian zu den 10 Top-Gebäuden des Jahrzehnts ausgewählt (siehe ann0940), und im Jahr 2012 wurde das Paranal-Observatorium inklusive der Residencia in der Land-Rover Werbekampagne „Perfect Places“ gezeigt (siehe ann12008).
