Active Phasing Experiment (APE) for the ELT
The ELT's 39 metre segmented mirror will have to be painstakingly aligned as if it was a single monolithic mirror. To experiment with this challenging allignment — which will have to be accurate to within nanometers (a few millionths of a mm) — the segmented mirror shown here will be installed on the VLT.
