Icy lagoon near Paranal

Unexpected view of the desert around Paranal Observatory. This area of the Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on Earth where rainfalls may not be detected for years. A surprising lagoon, about 50 metres wide and frozen because of the low night temperatures, is the result of a heavy rainfall in September 2006.
