Paranal's landscape

This panorama view of the amazing Paranal landscape also includes a fascinating atmospheric phenomenon. In the centre of the image, sitting above the rocky terrain, is what appears to be a small rainbow. This is called a glory, and it is caused when sunlight scatters off tiny droplets of water in the atmosphere. Glories appear at a point directly opposite the position of the Sun, so are only visible at sunrise or sunset.
