ELT Prefocal Station

The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) Prefocal Station is a huge structure, standing over twelve metres high. Its role will be to direct the light collected by the telescope’s massive optical system into science instruments and other test equipment. It also contains parts of the active optics system of the telescope.

The structure's three main functions include correcting the telescope’s alignment, keeping the segmented M1 mirror working as one and distributing light to the telescope's instruments.

The ELT will be the largest optical/near-infrared telescope in the world: "the world's biggest eye on the sky".
