Shooting the starry skies

Here, you can see a stitched panorama of glittering skies above Chile, with the distant mountaintops below. ESO builds and operates observatories in the Southern Hemisphere: due to the location of the important centre of the Milky Way and the two Magellanic Clouds, and as there are more observatories in the Northern Hemisphere.
