Sunset over La Silla Observatory

ESO's La Silla Observatory is situated in the Atacama desert, a plateau in Chile, west of the Andes mountains. The Atacama desert is the driest non-polar desert in the world. Despite being built in 1969, La Silla remains at the forefront of astronomy, and is one of the most scientifically productive observatories in the world.
