The Messenger heeft een nieuw digitaal thuis

Na bijna een halve eeuw verhuist het wetenschappelijke en technologische ESO-tijdschrift The Messenger naar de digitale wereld en wordt het een online-publicatie. De verhuizing valt samen met de publicatie van het nieuwe nummer van het tijdschrift, het 190ste.
The Messenger, dat in mei 1974 voor het eerst verscheen, is een belangrijke schakel tussen ESO en de brede astronomische gemeenschap, en brengt updates over wetenschappelijke, technische en andere ontwikkelingen van de organisatie. Buiten de grenzen van de ESO-gemeenschap deelt het tijdschrift boeiend sterrenkundig nieuws en updates over aanverwante technologieën met een breder publiek, waaronder beleidsmakers, journalisten, leraren en amateur-astronomen, alsmede geïnteresseerde wetenschappers uit andere vakgebieden.
Naarmate de omvang en de inhoud van The Messenger in de loop der jaren zijn geëvolueerd, is ook de manier waarop de lezers worden bereikt veranderd. Begin jaren 2000 werden digitale edities geïntroduceerd en inmiddels is het volledige archief, vanaf 1974 tot nu, geüpload naar de database van The Messenger. Daardoor zijn de gepubliceerde artikelen nu toegankelijker, bruikbaarder en beter traceerbaar dan ooit tevoren.
Nu lezers en tijdschriften elkaar steeds meer in de digitale wereld weten te vinden, en ESO een steeds grotere nadruk legt op duurzaamheid, is de tijd gekomen om van The Messenger een online-publicatie te maken. Lezers kunnen nu zowel nieuwe als oude nummers van het historische tijdschrift op de webpagina van The Messenger vinden.
De verhuizing valt samen met de publicatie van het meest recente nummer van The Messenger. Editie 190 bevat een speciale verzameling artikelen over de verschillende communautaire onderzoeken die zullen worden uitgevoerd met betrekking tot 4MOST – de 4-meter Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope, een nieuwe high-multiplex spectroscopische onderzoeksfaciliteit met een groot beeldveld die wordt gebouwd voor de Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) van de ESO-sterrenwacht op Paranal. Verder kunnen de lezers kennis nemen van de eerste resultaten van het Distributed Peer Review-proces voor waarnemingsvoorstellen dat vorig jaar bij ESO is ingevoerd, en van de aanhoudende gevolgen van de uitbarsting van de vulkaan Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai voor de waarnemingen op Paranal.
