Voor het eerst is een vers geproduceerd zwaar element, strontium, gedetecteerd in de ruimte, na de samensmelting van twee neutronensterren. Deze ontdekking is gedaan met de X-shooter-spectrograaf van ESO’s Very Large Telescope en vandaag gepubliceerd in Nature. De detectie bevestigt dat de zwaardere elementen in het heelal bij botsingen tussen neutronensterren kunnen ontstaan – een ontbrekend stukje in de puzzel van het ontstaan van chemische elementen.
