Mounted image 161: Paranal Panorama at Twilight

ESO’s Very Large Telescope at the Paranal Observatory in Chile being prepared for a night of observations. The four 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes appear at the centre and right and the four smaller 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes on the left. The telescope domes are open to allow the air to circulate and help minimise turbulence. Behind the telescope enclosures the final colours of the sunset can be seen in the west.
