April 2016

Dear Fellow Communicators,

The month of April brings many exciting events! We have opened registration for the Teacher Training session on Kepler’s Laws and Modern Astronomy, organised by the ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre, in collaboration with the Haus der Astronomie, Heidelberg. If you are a German-speaking teacher from our ESO Member States, we invite you to apply! You can read more about the teacher training session here.

During these next two weeks, two of our Photo Ambassadors, Babak Tafreshi and Petr Horálek, together with our Video Coordinator, Herbert Zodet, planetarium video producer, Theofanis N. Matsopoulos, and astrophotographer, Yuri Beletsky, are participating in the #ESOFulldome expedition to our sites in Chile. Their goal is to acquire footage to be used for the upcoming ESO Supernova Planetarium shows.

At the end of this month there will be first light for a new laser unit on ESO’s Very Large Telescope. We are preparing a media telecon for the event. You can read more here.

At the beginning of May the transit of Mercury will take place. Our colleagues at ESA are going to make a live webcast of the phenomenon from the Paranal Observatory in Chile. At the same time, the eight winners of #MeetESO will be visiting Paranal and ALMA. More about this campaign here.

CAPjournal issue 19 is out, with a special edition dedicated to the communication and outreach campaign for Rosetta. This is really one of the most interesting issues of CAPjournal so far and can be downloaded for free. Don’t forget that if you are a print subscriber, you will need to confirm your subscription by following the instructions that you can find in the announcement, as well as inside the journal (keep the envelope in which you receive CAPjournal).

Finally, don’t forget to submit your astrophotographs to the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition before 14 April 2016, and to the Photo Nightscape Awards. If you are a teacher you can also encourage your students to take part in Catch a Star!.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together!
