Dear Fellow Communicators,
We have returned from the International Planetarium Society conference in Warsaw even more enthusiastic about opening the ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre to visitors from Germany and the rest of Europe, and transforming it into the first open-source planetarium in the world for the planetarium community. Everything we produce for the ESO Supernova will be made available to the global planetarium community for free, be it entire planetarium shows, fulldome clips, music, event concepts or educational materials. We will update you with the details in the next outreach newsletter.
Last week, we tested Facebook 360 and received positive feedback from the community. We’ll keep publishing more 360-degree images on social media and we encourage you to consider using them or to produce your own. They work even better on mobile devices! Try it out here.
The Communicating Astronomy with the Public 2016 conference in Medellin, Colombia was another inspiring conference we’ve been involved in. Check out the presentations uploaded online. The IAU Commission C2 has already opened a call for the 2018 conference. If you are interested in engaging the astronomy communicators community in your area, consider applying to host the 2018 CAP meeting.
Don’t forget to let students in your area know about the 4th ESO Astronomy Camp — “a life changing experience”, in the words of a former participant. The deadline for applying for a bursary is 4 October 2016. The camp will take place from 26 December 2016 to 1 January 2017 in Italy and it is organised by ESO and its Science Outreach Network, together with the science education event organiser Sterrenlab and OAVdA. Learn more about the camp here.
We’re putting the finishing touches to the next issue of CAPjournal, a must-read journal for the astronomy communication community. Follow the instructions in this announcement to confirm your subscription if you wish to continue receiving the print edition of CAPjournal. This is the last issue that will be sent to the old mailing list.
Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together!
