Licancabur volcano looks over the ALMA site

ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, is currently under construction on the Chajnantor plateau, at an elevation of 5000 m, in the Chilean Andes. ALMA will have 66 antennas which can be spread across the desert plateau over distances up to 16 km. To allow the antennas to be repositioned, 192 antenna foundations have been built on Chajnantor. The 5920 m high Licancabur volcano, which dominates the landscape with its conic shape, is in the background. On the left side of the image is a hill known as “Cerro Chico”, whose summit reaches 5300 metres above sea level and offers a great view over the plateau.
