26 września John Halligan T.D., irlandzki Minister Nauczania, Umiejętności, Innowacji, Badań i Rozwoju oraz Xavier Barcons, Dyrektor Generalny ESO, podpisali Porozumienie Akcesyjne, które doprowadzi do przystąpienia Irlandii do Europejskiego Obserwatorium Południowego (ESO) – najbardziej produktywnego obserwatorium astronomicznego na świecie. ESO czeka, aby powitać Irlandię i będzie współpracować z astronomami i przemysłem kraju dla postępów w najnowocześniejszej astronomii.
