Câmara web de 360 graus instalada no Paranal

Foi instalada no Observatório do Paranal do ESO, no norte do Chile, local de acolhimento do Very Large Telescope (VLT), uma câmara de alta resolução de 360 graus de vanguarda. A nova webcam permite que qualquer pessoa que esteja online veja a plataforma do observatório na sua totalidade - pela primeira vez e com resolução muito elevada - assim como lugares mais distantes como o Cerro Armazones, local de instalação do futuro European Extremely Large Telescope.
A câmara de alta resolução fornece panoramas de 16 000 pixels de 360 graus a cada hora, diretamente para a web. O sistema, uma câmara chamada NEOS360, instalado pela Apical Technologies, executa igualmente zooms de muito alta resolução em pontos de interesse específicos na plataforma do VLT e em torno do observatório. A câmara propriamente dita encontra-se instalada no edifício do VLTI [1].
Esta nova câmara vem complementar as já existentes webcams que transmitem em direto do ESO e que mostram imagens do APEX e do Local de Operações da Rede ALMA (AOS, sigla do inglês), no planalto do Chajnantor, situado 5000 metros acima do nível do mar, do Local de Apoio às Operações do ALMA (OSF, sigla do inglês), perto de Toconao e a câmara panorâmica que filma durante a noite no Observatório de La Silla.
As imagens a alta resolução em direto podem ser vistas a partir da página do VLT no site do ESO, assim como imagens de zooms a alta resolução de um Telescópio Principal, de vários Telescópios Auxiliares, do Telescópio de Rastreio do VLT e do Cerro Armazones. O distante vulcão Llullaillaco pode inclusivamente ser visto de vez em quando à espantosa distância de 190 km do Paranal.

[1] O edifício do VLTI é onde os raios de luz dos diferentes telescópios são combinados de modo a fazer dos telescópios individuais um interferómetro gigante, o Interferómetro do Very Large Telescope do ESO (VLTI), o qual permite aos astrónomos observar pormenores 25 vezes mais detalhados do que com os telescópios individuais.
