March - M17, the Omega Nebula

M17, or the Omega Nebula, is one of the largest, brightest and youngest star-forming regions in the Milky Way. It is illuminated by radiation from the young, hot stars which are progressing through their adolescence within the cloud. This image was taken with the Wide Field Imager (WFI), a camera installed on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope, and it provides one of the sharpest images of the entire nebula ever taken.
