ESO ahora entrega videos y material de cúpula completa con mayor velocidad

Como institución científica, ESO dispone de una sólida infraestructura para entregar datos astronómicos de vanguardia a los astrónomos en los Estados Miembros de ESO. Pero, por otra parte, ESO también ofrece casi 10.000 imágenes y 2500 videos para un uso más amplio, dentro de los medios de comunicación y el público en general.
Todas las imágenes y videos de ESO se proporcionan sin costo, y la mayor parte de nuestro tráfico de internet proviene de la distribución de videos, desde podcasts de video hasta videos de gran tamaño en Ultra HD para planetarios de cúpula completa. Algunos archivos poseen pocos gigabytes, pero pueden alcanzar hasta 400 gigabytes en el caso de shows para planetarios de cúpula completa.
Hasta ahora, ESO ha tenido un servidor único, situado en la Sede Central de ESO en Alemania, desde donde se distribuyen todos los contenidos a través del planeta. Sin embargo, con cerca del 40% del tráfico público de ESO originándose desde fuera de Europa, las desventajas en términos de velocidad y facilidad para el acceso de estos usuarios a los contenidos de ESO ha sido una preocupación durante más de una década.
La entrega de enormes archivos a través del mundo desde un solo lugar tiene como consecuencia un alto grado de latencia, o lentitud en la transferencia de datos, para los usuarios situados a mayor distancia del servidor, y como muchos de nuestros videos han sido diseñados para obtener una vista preliminar en pantalla en tiempo real, el acceso de dichos contenidos desde un servidor situado a gran distancia resultaba en una falta de continuidad en la reproducción de los videos, etc.
Contar con una Red de Distribución de Contenidos era un tema de discusión recurrente pero, sólo ahora, debido a los cambios en el mercado, la llegada de nuevos proveedores de CDN y la creciente urgencia de nuestra situación, hemos logrado establecer una alianza con estas redes.
Como parte de una colaboración, el proveedor de CDN, CDN77, ha puesto todos los videos de ESO en más de 25 servidores a través de todo el mundo. Ello brindará a los usuarios, (especialmente aquellos que se encuentran en América, Asia y Australia), mayor velocidad para el acceso a los contenidos de ESO. Será una gran ventaja para los visitantes de la web provenientes de Brasil, el 16avo Estado Miembro de ESO (en proceso de ratificación), como también para los usuarios de Chile, nuestro país anfitrión.
Los diversos servidores proporcionan un acceso más veloz y conveniente a los contenidos de ESO en todo el mundo, para los usuarios fuera de Europa, ya sea para descargar shows para planetarios y videos en Ultra HD, o para ver podcasts. Los usuarios podrán descargar y ver contenidos a una velocidad diez veces mayor que en la actualidad.
