För första gången har ett nybildat tungt grundämne upptäckts som har bildats i en kollision mellan två neutronstjärnor. Upptäckten gjordes med ESO:s X-shooterinstrument vid Very Large Telescope (VLT) och publiceras i dag i tidskriften Nature. Denna detektion bekräftar att tunga grundämnen kan uppstå när neutronstjärnor smälter samman och ger ett viktigt bidrag till förståelsen av hur kemiska ämnen bildas.
