Ett internationellt forskarlag har använt markbaserade teleskop, däribland Europeiska sydobservatoriets Very Large Telescope (ESO:s VLT), för att följa temperaturvariationer i Neptunus atmosfär under en 17-årsperiod. Forskarna fann en oväntad minskning av Neptunus globala temperatur, följt av en dramatisk uppvärmning av dess sydpol.
