Finanzierungsschub für das Extremely Large Telescope der ESO

Das Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), das neue Flaggschiff der ESO, das zur Beantwortung der größten Fragen zu unserem Universum gebaut wird, hat eine 10-prozentige Budget-Aufstockung bekommen. Durch die vom ESO-Rat – dem Hauptorgan der Organisation – genehmigte Aufstockung der Mittel belaufen sich die Gesamtkosten des Projekts auf 1,3 Mrd. EUR. Das 39-Meter-Teleskop, das auf dem Cerro Armazones in der Nähe des Paranal-Observatoriums der ESO im Norden Chiles errichtet wird, wird noch in diesem Jahrzehnt seinen Betrieb aufnehmen.
"Die Entscheidung des Rates bedeutet, dass die ESO über die Mittel verfügt, um eine ehrgeizige und äußerst leistungsfähige Wissenschaftsmaschine zu bauen, die vollständig in das Paranal-Observatorium der ESO integriert ist und den längerfristigen Bestrebungen der astronomischen Gemeinschaft entspricht", sagt ESO-Generaldirektor Xavier Barcons. Insgesamt werden 80% des ELT-Budgets in Verträge mit der Industrie in ESO-Mitgliedstaaten und in Chile investiert.
Durch die Aufstockung der Mittel werden die wissenschaftlichen Fähigkeiten des im Bau befindlichen Teleskops gestärkt und mit denen des ursprünglichen, vom Rat 2012 genehmigten ELT-Programms in Einklang gebracht. Zwei Jahre später gab der ESO-Rat grünes Licht für den ELT-Bau , legte jedoch fest, dass dieser in zwei Phasen erfolgen sollte, wobei nur Mittel für ein voll funktionsfähiges, aber weniger leistungsfähiges „Phase-1-ELT“ bereitgestellt wurden.
Das überarbeitete Budget umfasst die Beschaffung von Komponenten, die ursprünglich auf die zweite Phase des Projekts verschoben wurden, wie die zweite Präfokalstation des Teleskops, zwei weitere Laser-Leitsternsysteme, eine Reihe astronomierelevanter atmosphärischer Überwachungsgeräte und ein kleines technisches Gebäude am Armazones, um Betriebs- und Wartungsaktivitäten zu optimieren. Das neue Budget berücksichtigt die Auswirkungen bekannter technischer Risiken auf Kosten und Zeitplan sowie die Kosten für Aktivitäten, die erforderlich sind, um das ELT als Teil des Paranal-Observatoriums der ESO in Betrieb zu nehmen.
Der Finanzierungsschub folgt einer ELT-Gesamtkostenuntersuchung, die 2019 begonnen hat. Die Untersuchung ist ein Beispiel für die kontinuierliche Überwachung des Projekts durch die ESO und das Engagement für die Bereitstellung eines wegweisenden Teleskops, das die größten astronomischen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit bewältigen und dennoch unvorstellbare Entdeckungen machen wird. Dieses ehrgeizige und aufregende ESO-Projekt ist ein wahrhaft internationales Unterfangen und wird dank der Mitarbeiter und Leitungsgremien der Organisation, der astronomischen Gemeinschaft, der Industrie und wissenschaftlicher Einrichtungen in den Mitgliedstaaten sowie des Gastgeberlandes Chile ermöglicht.
