First Hyakutake Image from Bavaria

This photo of Comet Hyakutake with tails is the first to be obtained from the territory of Bavaria. It was made by Peter Staettmayer, Director of the Munich Public Observatory (Volkssternwarte) from his private observatory in Herrsching at the Ammersee, some 30 km southwest of Munich.

The aperture of the telescope was 20 cm and the focal length 76 cm. The exposure started on March 14, 1996, at UT 01:45 and lasted 20 min. The emulsion was Kodak Technical Pan. The sky transparency was low.

The largest diameter of the field shown here is about 80 arcmin. The orientation is indicated.
