Fin 2019, la galaxie SDSS1335+0728, jusqu'alors discrète, s'est soudainement mise à briller plus que jamais. Pour comprendre pourquoi, les astronomes ont utilisé les données de plusieurs observatoires spatiaux et terrestres, dont le Very Large Telescope (VLT) de l'Observatoire européen austral, afin de suivre les variations de luminosité de la galaxie. Dans une étude publiée aujourd'hui, ils concluent qu'ils assistent à des changements jamais observés auparavant dans une galaxie, probablement dus au réveil soudain du trou noir massif qui se trouve en son cœur.
