Virtual Tours 360° — Where on Earth is ESO?
19 Agosto 2011
The new and improved ESO Virtual Tours 360° take you one step beyond! Using Google maps you can now find out exactly where ESO is. And with the new viewpoint feature you can see your exact vantage point and which direction you’re facing at any time. This new perspective lets you navigate your way across the globe, from our observatories in the Chilean Andes to the Headquarters building in Munich suburbia, and find out where ESO goes to work.
Each tour has been rejuvenated, with a host of new and breathtaking panoramas and videos, such as this stunning VLT timelapse footage. Background information is available at all sites, including information on ESO’s telescopes and instruments. And now you can take a look behind the scenes at ESO Headquarters, too!
Take a trip to Garching (near Munich) in Germany and enter the Headquarters building through the reception hall. Look around the auditorium, where many famous astronomers have given lectures over the years. Spend some quiet time in the library and to finish your trip see the amazing rooftop view from ESO Headquarters at sunset.
The Virtual Tours also take you to La Silla, Paranal-Armazones and Chajnantor in Chile directly from your home. Climb 2635 metres and see ESO’s flagship facility, the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Cerro Paranal. Then travel southeast to the neighbouring mountain, Cerro Armazones, where the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), soon to be the world’s largest eye on the sky, is being built and enjoy a stunning 360° view from the mountain top. From here the La Silla Observatory is just a short click away. You will arrive at ESO’s first observatory, home to some of the world’s finest exoplanet hunting telescopes. End your journey with a trip to the stars and take the Milky Way tour for excellent views of the night sky.
ESO Virtual Tours are iOS compatible, making them accessible to iPod, iPhone and iPad users.
