Video e Contenuti fulldome dell'ESO: adesso il Download è più veloce

In quanto istituzione scientifica, l'ESO offre buone infrastrutture per fornire dati astronomici all'avanguardia agli astronomi dei suoi Stati Membri. Tra le altre cose, l'ESO mette a disposizione quasi 10 000 immagini e 2 500 video destinati a un uso più ampio da parte dei media e del pubblico.
Tutte le immagini e i video dell'ESO sono forniti gratuitamente e la maggior parte del nostro traffico internet deriva dalla distribuzione dei video – da podcast video a video Ultra HD di grandi dimensioni e video per planetari "fulldome". Alcuni dei file più grandi hanno le dimensioni di qualche gigabyte e possono arrivare fino a 400 gigabyte per gli spettacoli di planetari "fulldome".
Finora l'ESO ha avuto un unico server – la sua sede centrale – da dove distribuiva i propri contenuti in tutto il mondo. Tuttavia, dato che circa il 40% del traffico pubblico dell'ESO ha origine fuori dall'Europa, lo svantaggio in termini di velocità e facilità con cui questi utenti potevano accedere ai contenuti dell'ESO ha rappresentato un problema per più di un decennio.
La consegna in tutto il mondo di file enormi da una singola posizione comporta una latenza alta – cioe' un lento trasferimento dei dati – per gli utenti più lontani dal server, e visto che molti dei nostri video sono progettati per essere visionati direttamente sullo schermo in tempo reale, l'accesso ai contenuti da un server posizionato così lontano significava che i video potevano avere delle interruzioni.
La possibilita' di usare una Rete di distribuzione dei Contenuti (o Content Delivery Network: CDN) è stata spesso oggetto di dibattito, ma soltanto adesso, con i cambiamenti del mercato, l'arrivo di nuovi provider CDN e vista la crescente urgenza della nostra situazione, siamo riusciti a stipulare una partnership con una rete di questo tipo.
Come parte della collaborazione, il provider CDN CDN77 ha caricato tutti i video e le immagini dell'ESO su 27 server in tutto il mondo. Questo permette un accesso molto più rapido ai contenuti, in particolare agli utenti in America, Asia e Australia, ed è vantaggioso soprattutto per i visitatori del web del 16esimo Stato Membro dell'ESO, il Brasile (in fase di ratifica), e della nostra nazione ospite, il Cile.
I diversi server forniscono un accesso più veloce e pratico ai contenuti ESO in tutto il mondo per gli utenti fuori dall'Europa, compreso il download di spettacoli di planetari, video e immagini ultra HD o visualizzazione di podcast. Gli utenti potranno scaricare e visualizzare i contenuti con una velocità 10 volte superiore rispetto a quella attuale.
