Incremento dei finanziamenti per l’Extremely Large Telescope dell'ESO

Il budget dell'ELT (Extremely Large Telescope), il nuovo telescopio di punta dell'ESO in costruzione per rispondere alle più grandi domande sull'Universo, è stato aumentato del 10%. L'incremento dei finanziamenti approvato dal Consiglio dell'ESO - il principale organo di governo dell'organizzazione - porta il costo totale del progetto a 1,3 miliardi di euro. Il telescopio di 39 metri, in costruzione a Cerro Armazones, vicino all'Osservatorio dell'ESO al Paranal, nel nord del Cile, sarà operativo prima della fine del decennio.
"La decisione del Consiglio significa che l'ESO ha i fondi per costruire una macchina scientifica ambiziosa ed estremamente potente, totalmente integrata con l'Osservatorio dell'ESO al Paranal, che soddisfa le aspirazioni a lungo termine della comunità astronomica", commenta il Direttore enerale dell'ESO, Xavier Barcons. Nel complesso, l'80% del budget dell'ELT viene investito in contratti con l'industria negli stati membri dell'ESO e in Cile.
L’incremento dei finanziamenti rafforzerà le capacità scientifiche del telescopio in costruzione, portandole in linea con quelle previste nel programma originale di ELT approvato dal Consiglio nel 2012. Due anni dopo, il Consiglio dell'ESO ha dato il via libera alla costruzione di ELT ma ha stabilito che la costruzione avvenisse in due fasi, con finanziamenti impegnato solo per un “ELT di Fase 1” pienamente funzionante ma meno potente.
Il budget rivisto comprende l'acquisto di componenti originariamente rinviati alla seconda fase del progetto, come la seconda stazione prefocale del telescopio, altri due sistemi stellari a guida laser, una serie di apparecchiature di monitoraggio atmosferico di parametri importanti per l'astronomia e un piccolo edificio tecnico ad Armazones per ottimizzare le attività di funzionamento e di manutenzione. Il nuovo budget incorpora l'impatto sui costi e sul programma dei rischi tecnici noti e include il costo delle attività necessarie per mettere in funzione l'ELT come parte dell'Osservatorio dell'ESO a Paranal.
L'aumento dei finanziamenti fa seguito a un esercizio sui costi totali dell’ELT iniziato nel 2019. L'esercizio è un esempio del continuo monitoraggio del progetto da parte dell'ESO e dell'impegno per la realizzazione di un telescopio pionieristico che affronterà le più grandi sfide astronomiche del nostro tempo e porterà a scoperte ancora inimmaginabili. Un'impresa davvero internazionale, questo ambizioso ed entusiasmante progetto dell'ESO è reso possibile grazie al personale dell'organizzazione e agli organi di governo, alla comunità astronomica, all'industria e alle istituzioni scientifiche degli Stati membri, oltre che allo Stato ospite, il Cile.
