150-th ANNIVERSARY OF ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY LIBRARY A.K.Osipov, T.M.Solntseva The astronomical observatory of Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University is one of the oldest ones of Ukraine. It will celebrate 150-th anniversary of their foundation. Professor V.F. Fedorov was the founder and the first chief of the observatory. He belonged to those astronomers that understood the purpose and tasks of astronomy profoundly and knew its methods perfectly. V.F. Fedorov understood that new observatory needs to have not only perfect devices and instruments but and serious scientific library and that fruitfull researches and student's training are impossible without it. The chief of the Poulkovo Observatory and the father of well- known astronomer's dynasty V.Ya. Struve transmitted 900 volumes of book's duplicates of the private library of G.W. Olbers (1758- 1840) to Kyiv University in 1841. This library acquired by Russian Academy of sciences for Poulkovo Observatory. This collection of books uderlay the scientific library of Kyiv University. It was devided into subjects: 1. Mathematics - 43 units 2. Tables of trigonometry and tables of logarithms - 9 3. General astronomy - 33 4. Astrophysics - 17 5. Tables of astronomy - 20 6. Astronomical observations - 20 7. Star catalogues - 11 8. Scientific works about surfaces of the Sun, the Moon, planets - 8 9. Comets - 8 10. Collections - 18 11. Celestial maps - 11 12. History of astronomy - 27 13. Memoirs, ephemerises - 419 14. Figure of the Earth, geodesy - 15 15. Optics - 11 16. General physics - 7 17. Collection of dissertations - 231 So, book's collection of the Olbers' private library included almost all the branches of astronomy of the middle of XIX century. There are many books of great value and rarest ones: 1. Copernico, N. De lateribus et angulis triangulorum, 1542 2. Des-cartes, R. Principia philosophia, 1664 3. Des-cartes, R. Geometria, 1683 4. Baueri, I. Uranometria, omnium asteris morum continens schemata, nova methodo delineata, aereis lamims expressa, 1603 5. Kepplero, J. Astronomiae pars optica traditur, 1604 6. Newtono, I, Philosophiae naturalis principia Mathematica, 1714 11. Newton, I. The Cronology of ancient kingdoms amended. A short chronicle from the first memory of things in Europe to the Conquest of Persia by Alexander the Great, 1728 12. Flamsteed. J. Atlas coelestis, 1753. 13. Cardani, M. Opus novum de proportionibus numerium Basileae, Maiest-Gratia, 1570 14. Hevelii, J. Cometographia, 1665 Taking into account that books of Olbers' library are unique we consider its catalogue necessary to prepare for issue. Now our library contains more that 100.000 units of storage: monographs, periodical astronomical editions of the majority of the astronomical observatories and institutions. There are collections of scientific works of Laplace, Keppler, Lagrange, La Lande and other classics of natural sciences, complete sets of national annuals from the first (Nautical Almanac since 1843, Connaissance des Temps since 1757, Berliner Astronomisches Jahruch since 1776); astrographic and star catalogues (Carte du Ciel Catalogues); publications of astronomical observatories (L'Observatoire imperial de Paris. Annales, Memoires since 1855, K.K. Sternwarte in Wien. Annalen. Neuer Folge since 1841, Lick Observatory (Mount Hamilton). Bulletins since 1901, publications since 1887, contributions since 1893, U.S. Naval Observatory. Observations since 1870, publications since 1900). The periodical fund contains complete sets of journals from the very beginning: Astronomische Nachrichten since 1823; Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society since 1843. The systematic catalogue of scientific library has such sections of astronomy and adjacent sciences: 1. Theoretical astronomy and celestial mechanics 2. Astrometry 3. Astrophysics 4. Theoretical Astrophysics 5. Star astronomy 6. Radioastronomy 7. The Sun 8. The Solar system 9. Cosmogony and cosmology 10. Geodesy 11. Geodesy and topography 12. Higher geodesy 13. Cartography 14. Aerophotography and photogrammetry 15. Theory and methods of measurement's processing (observations) 16. Physics 17. Mechanics 18. Acoustics 19. Chemistry 20. Geology 21. Geophysics Subscribers of our scientific library (besides of scientific workers of our astronomical observatory) are professors, teachers and students of Kyiv University, scientific workers of the Main Astronomical Observatory of National Academy of sciences of Ukraine and other scientific institutions. Preservation of funds of scientific library takes a significant place in the activity of the observatory. In this connection it's necessary to note great merits of Ju.D. Sokolov acted as a chief of the observatory during the Second World War. Due to his efforts library's funds were saved. Now funds of our library enlarge owing to acquisitions in shops, gifts of colleagues-astronomers, interchange of literature with libraries of astronomical observatories and humanitarian help. Due to this support our library received about 150 of units of periodical fund. Astronomical Observatory of Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University highly appreciates this support and expresses our profound gratitude to foreign observatories for their great and unselfish help.
