Abstract:
A program developed to analyze complex stellar systems made up of early-type OB binaries is briefly discussed. The program permits fundamental stellar quantities and orbital elements to be derived as precisely as possible. Photometric solutions and absolute dimensions of four recently analyzed OB-type binaries are presented as examples.

Abstract:
Recent attempts to detect brown dwarfs are discussed. A program of observation of the closest Southern Hemisphere stars with the infrared speckle system at the La Silla 3.6 m telescope is emphasized. Ongoing development of infrared observational techniques in order to detect the dim light of a brown dwarf near a luminous star is examined.

Abstract:
First results are reported of a spectroscopic survey to study the continuum energy distribution of very low resolution of southern old novae and the intensities of low and high excitation lines at 3000-9000 A of the largest possible number of such objects at different evolution stages. A flare of the very slow nova CN Vel is reported.

Abstract:
A deep H-alpha survey was conducted to obtain radial velocities of the ionized gas and the structure of the southern H II regions in the Galaxy and in the Magellanic Clouds. The telescope and high-performance software are described, and the reasons for the use of a 36 cm telescope and a photon-counting camera are presented. Some early survey results are reported.

Abstract:
Photometry was used to study several young LMC clusters and to test the proposition that the IMF of stars in such clusters has a universal shape. The proposition is not proved or refuted here, but it is shown that the very steep IMFs found by Mateo (1989) are not real but probably result from a special aspect of his data reduction.

Abstract:
The photometric and kinematic properties of the core of the elliptical galaxy IC 4296 are studied to obtain clues about the formation and dynamical evolution of the parent galaxy. The observed B-R and B-V gradients can be ascribed to the presence of a star cluster made of low-mass stars, to emission from ionized gas in the core, or to the presence of nuclear dust. The luminosity profile show apparently sizeable deviations from the R exp 1/4 law, which could be caused by stellar redistribution in the field of a supermassive black hole.

Abstract:
Study of the molecular absorption by CO in the nucleus of NGC 5128, the parent galaxy of the strong radio source Centaurus A has revealed the existence of a circumnuclear disk of Cen A. The absorption lines of various molecular species of Cen A are examined, and the results show the possibility of finding out how an active galaxy nucleus is fed by the surrounding galaxy.
